Include Kamiak in a Grant

Description of Kamiak

WSU has made a significant investment in support of research computing by providing a condominium-style high-performance computing cluster, Kamiak. As of November 2023, the Kamiak research computing cluster has 152 compute nodes with 4,616 cores, of which 15 are Graphics Processor Unit (GPU) nodes with 268,160 CUDA cores. In particular, Kamiak recently added a state-of-the-art GPU partition sponsored by an NSF MRI grant awarded in 2022 to support AI-driven research, consisting of 3 80-core nodes, each with 1TB of memory and 4 Nvidia H100 GPU’s, that is open to all WSU researchers. The HPC infrastructure, which was refreshed in 2021 with a $1.2M university investment, includes fully virtualized head nodes, an HDR100 InfiniBand network for fast storage access and inter-node communication,  and 1 PB of all-flash NVMe shared data storage with a state-of-the-art WekaIO parallel file system. Since its inception, Kamiak has grown through the addition of faculty purchased compute nodes. Purchase of hardware on the Kamiak cluster guarantees investigators on-demand priority access to purchased resources, while idle compute resources across the cluster are available for use by the entire research community.

Kamiak is housed in the WSU ITS data center and is serviced by a dedicated research computing support team that includes two full-time HPC system administrators and two Ph.D. level HPC computational scientists devoted to application software optimization, training, and outreach to assist with adoption and use of the cluster by on-campus researchers.

Standard Compute Nodes

We propose the purchase of XXXXX compute nodes to be installed in the Kamiak condominium-style cluster. Each of these nodes will be equipped with dual Intel Xeon Scalable XXXX processors providing XX total physical cores per node and XXXXXX GB of memory. These nodes will be connected to each other and to shared storage via a fast HDR100 InfiniBand network.  WSU guarantees on-demand access to these nodes, and full warranty, for a period of no less than 5 years.

GPU Nodes

We propose the purchase of XXXXX GPU nodes to be installed in the Kamiak condominium-style cluster. Each of these nodes will be equipped with dual Intel Xeon Scalable XXXX processors with XX total physical cores per node and XXXX GB of memory, and XXX Nvidia XXXX GPU accelerators providing XXXX CUDA cores. These nodes will be connected to each other and to shared storage via a fast HDR100 InfiniBand network.  WSU guarantees on-demand access to these nodes, and full warranty, for a period of no less than 5 years.

Storage

We also propose the purchase of XXXXX GB of storage rental on the Kamiak storage system for a period of XXX years. This is a state-of-the-art parallel file system with 1 PB of all-flash NVMe shared storage connected to the compute resources via an HDR100 InfiniBand network.
