Description of Kamiak

WSU has made a significant investment in support of institutional research computing by acquiring a high-performance condominium-style computational cluster, Kamiak. The strategic acquisition of Kamiak provides the essential resources to be responsive to the needs of the university’s research computing community. The Kamiak research computing cluster has 71 general purpose computational nodes providing 1,420 physical cores, a large memory machine with 2TB of RAM for high memory applications, full Infiniband interconnect for fast message passing in high-performance applications, 633 TB of fast, tiered data storage, two compute nodes with dual Graphics Processor Units (GPUs) and one node with dual Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors. Since its initial acquisition in 2015, Kamiak has grown through the addition of investigator purchased compute nodes and has the capacity to support 144 nodes for a total of 2,880 physical cores. Purchase of hardware on the Kamiak cluster guarantees investigators on demand, immediate access to purchased resources and priority access to any idle compute resources across the cluster.

Kamiak is housed in the WSU Data Center and is serviced by WSU IT Services. In addition to the the full WSU/IT Services Enterprise group, the Kamiak support team includes two dedicated full time employees – including a PhD level HPC consultant – devoted to systems administration, outreach, application software optimization, and training to assist with adoption and use of the cluster by on-campus researchers.

Standard Compute Nodes

We propose the purchase of XXXXX compute nodes to be installed in the Kamiak condo cluster. Each of these nodes will be equipped with dual Intel E5-2660v4 processors, providing 28 total physical cores per node, and XXXXXXGB of 2400MT/s DDR4 ECC RAM. These nodes will be connected to each other via a non-blocking Infiniband and to the rest of the cluster at an overall blocking ration of 2:1. WSU guarantees immediate and on demand access to these nodes for a period of no less than 5 years.

GPU Nodes

We propose the purchase of XXXXX GPU nodes to be installed in the Kamiak condo cluster. Each of these nodes will be equipped with dual Intel E5-2670v3 processors, providing 24 total physical cores per node, dual Tesla K80 accelerators providing 9984 cuda cores, and 256 GB of 2133MT/s DDR4 ECC RAM. These nodes will be connected to each other via a non-blocking Infiniband and to the rest of the cluster at an overall blocking ration of 2:1. WSU guarantees immediate and on demand access to these nodes for a period of no less than 5 years.

Storage

We also propose the purchase of XXXXX GB of storage on the Kamiak storage appliance for a period of XXX years. This is network attached storage consisting of 7.2k RPM discs with a transfer rate of 6GBps and connected to the compute resources via 10GB Ethernet.
